Candy cane and gold ornament in evergreen tree

Pittsburgh has some of the greatest holiday attractions and events in the country. Pittsburgh has so much to offer during the holidays that people choose to stay at the cultural district hotels, located so close to the festivities. This puts all of their destinations within walking distance, allowing them to enjoy something different every night, instead of trying to fit all of these attractions into one day.

Market Square

Located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, Market Square transforms into a classic Christmas village known as the People’s Gas Holiday Market. The People’s Gas Holiday Market is a quaint, old-world inspired market lit with Christmas cheer and filled with a mix of cultural goods including sweet crepes, bratwurst and strudel.

Visitors can celebrate the holidays while they stroll about the shops and marketplaces set up throughout the square. This one-of-a-kind shopping experience is made complete with live daily performances that display a diverse amount of cultural and ethnic entertainment.

PPG Place

Located close to Market Square, PPG Place is the site of one of the most well-known complexes in the world. The complex is made of six buildings that were constructed with steel and glass, creating reflective fronts that stretch toward the sky in castle-like peaks. These reflective facades, alone, can give the visitor a sense of fairy-tale enchantment. However, when they are combined with holiday decorations and festivities, the sense of enchantment turns into a world of wonder.

The MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink is home to ice skating lessons, birthday parties and private rentals during the year. However, during the holiday season, it becomes a part of the winter landscape when the Christmas tree is lit. This enormous outdoor rink stretches 104 feet by 104 feet, offering a grand display of lights and Christmas magic when the tree is lit in the middle of the rink.

Along the outside of PPG Place, the 12th Annual Gingerbread House & Train Exhibit showcases some of the most delicately crafted gingerbread houses by chefs, students and organizations throughout the Pittsburgh area. The exhibit is enhanced by the inclusion of rare trains from the private collection of Don Jones, a local icon and artist.

Inside of PPG Place, there is a wonderful attraction called the Spirit of Giving from Around the World. This exhibit features original paintings and Santas that are as large as life. Each painting displays the customs and celebrations of cultures around the world as they come together in their holiday traditions. The life-size Santas come with their own unique names, gleaned from global cultures. This collection can provide a true sense of the fantasy and wonder of this very special time of year.

Phipps Winter Light Garden

Each year, Phipps Winter Light Garden provides a breath-taking display of creativity and ingenuity with its Winter Wonderland exhibit. Illuminated glass, bright, colorful blooms and rich evergreens help Christmas carol to life. Phipps will also offer beautiful displays indoors, as well, providing a rich experience the entire family can appreciate.
