The 2016 U.S. Open Golf Championship will mark the 116th time that a champion has been crowned in this country, and it will be staged on the course that has been home to the U.S. Open more than any other – Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The tournament will be contested from June 16-19 this year, and as always, is expected to attract not only the best golfers in this country, but the best from all around the world as well.
The Golf Course at Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont Country Club is located in the suburb of Oakmont, situated northeast of Pittsburgh, and is the oldest highly rated golf course in the country, consistently ranking in the Top 5 by Gold Digest. Oakmont has already hosted the U.S. Open a total of eight times, and has served as the chosen venue for 21 other major championships in the world of gold, far surpassing the total for any other golf course. The last time it hosted the Men’s U.S. Open was in 2007, when Angel Cabrera emerged victorious, and in 2010, when the Women’s U.S. Open was staged at Oakmont, eventually won by Paula Creamer.
Likely Counters for This Year’s Championship
The first name on most lists of this year’s top contenders is 23-year-old Jordan Spieth. Currently ranked number one in the world, Spieth has made the most of his short career. He is the reigning U.S. Open champion, having won in 2015, and also won last year’s Masters Tournament on his way to being named the PGA Player of the Year.
Australia’s Jason Day had a breakthrough year in 2015, winning the PGA Championship and rising to second in the World Golf Rankings behind Spieth. Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy had a solid 2015, even though he was injured during the latter part of the year. He is ranked third in the world, just ahead of America’s Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, both of whom also had excellent seasons in 2015.
Three international golf stars to keep an eye on at this tournament are Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, Britain’s Justin Rose, and Australia’s Adam Scott, ranked 6th, 7th, and 11th in the world respectively.
Other Activities Around the City

There are numerous fine dining restaurants here where visitors can enjoy great dining and great vistas.
The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium complex is one of the few venues in the country to combine the functions of zoo and aquarium, making it easy for area visitors to maximize time spent at a single locale. The Phipps Conservatory features walk-in gardens, historic sites and landmarks, and several parks which highlight the beauty and peacefulness of nature, and is consistently rated one of the city’s top attractions.
